Meet Jared Magnus, who recently joined Claret to focus on providing in-depth insight to influence the performance of the portfolio investments.
You have been with Claret for just over 3 months now. Why Claret and what are you looking forward to in the new year?
Having studied Investment Management at university and moved to the UK to begin my career, I found myself within a Series A start-up. Having supported on fundraising activities at the start-up, I knew that where I really wanted to be was on the other side of the table.
Claret provided this change with the bonus of being a venture debt lender, an area I had little experience in, but one where I understood the room for growth and expansion in the European markets would be immense. I knew I would have a steep learning curve and with a successful, experienced team to learn from – it was a no brainer.
In the upcoming year I’m excited to get more involved in various aspects of the business and really start making an impact with the work I do and support the team as best I can.
Having been at a start-up yourself, what skills and experience do you bring to Claret?
I think the biggest lesson I learnt while working at a start-up was how quickly things can change, be that financially, personnel wise or strategically. Knowing this, I truly understand the information portfolio companies send us and look at it as part of the bigger picture – not just as a snapshot in time.
I’ve learned to be dynamic and take on tasks with a fresh perspective. And sometimes adjust – as the required outcome may need to change.
Favourite thing to do in your down time?
Being from South Africa, sport is something I have grown up with. So, any opportunity I get to be involved in sport in some way is taken. You can likely find me somewhere in front of a TV any time there is Formula 1 or rugby on.
